Strawberry basil lemonade

When making the choice to be paleo, or just healthier in general, one of the challenges is finding a beverage that is both tasty and healthy.  When you have to give up processed foods, soda and anything with added sugar that pretty much limits you to water and unsweetened tea.   Over the next couple of days I’ll be sharing some recipes I’ve come up with to help break away from the dull and flavorless beverage options we’re left with once eliminating those containing unhealthy additives.  I had a strawberry basil lemonade at a cafe in Chicago a couple of years ago, and it was surprisingly delicious.  I figured I’d give it a go at home, and it turned out great.

2-3 large very ripe strawberries

3/4 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice

1 sprig fresh basil

splash of sparkling water

1 tsp agave nectar (optional)

Slice and hull the strawberries, then chop them into small pieces.  Chop basil, and add it and the strawberries to an 8 oz glass.  Add agave if using and muddle all ingredients together until berries have released most of their juices.  Add fresh squeezed lemon juice and stir.  Taste to see if more of any flavor is needed.  Depending on how sweet the strawberries, or how tart the lemons, you may need more or less agave.   Add ice and a splash of sparkling water, then stir again.  Garnish with lemon and a strawberry wedge.  Enjoy!
